We woke up in the desert at 5 a.m. to get packed up and
departed before the hot desert sun. Breakfast was glorious purely because of
the bucket of hazelnut spread. The trip back to Cairo took nearly 6 hours so I
did quite a bit of sleeping and reading.
Currently, we are located in the Marriott for three days, and the hotel is absolutely breathtaking! It used
to be a palace so everything is very extravagant.
Around 4 o’clock we went to get Egyptian pizza. While at the
pizza place we got to see Professor Hamad on Nile TV in an English speaking
interview! After the interview, Professor Hamad brought a friend of his, Ahmed
who had just done an interview after Hamad’s, to come speak to us at the pizza
restaurant. He provided interesting insight on his role in the revolution in
January 2011 and discussed what motivated him to be on the front lines while he
had a good job and family at risk at home.
This day was a very important day to all Egyptians because
it is the first time in their lifetimes that they can vote for the president of
their country in which their vote will actually be counted and not rigged by a
corrupt government. The people of Egypt are very excited about this opportunity
and to hopefully move their government towards a democracy. Our group is so
interested in talking to Egyptian people from all different backgrounds with diverse
opinions and hearing their take on the revolution, election, and the future of
Egypt.
After dinner and the impromptu lecture we got
the rest of the evening to relax at the hotel! Much needed after our long
couple days in the hot desert sun.
